"Giantland" (1933)-Pencil Concept Background

This is one of the first pencil backgrounds I picked up. I liked the detail, the direction and the "sign-off."

"Giantland" (1933)

Here's a close up. I shifted the color a little to make the directions and notes pop out a little more.

The theme of Mickey overcoming the odds appeared in "Giantland" (1933), "Brave Little Tailor" (1938) and "Fun and Fancy Free: Mickey and the Beanstalk" (1947). Obviously, there were other examples, but these seemed to be most similar in style and setting. There was something about setting the story in the "days of old" before the introduction of pervasive technology (radios, cars, planes, guns, etc.) -- it was a little easier for the viewer to focus on the story and not be distracted by the bells and whistles.

----- DATABASE NOTES -----

From “Giantland” (1933). Excellent detailed pencil background of a castle. Overlaid is the flight path for a butterfly. Signed off by Cy Young as the animator. [12”W x 9”H] SeqID-0052 8/1/2005
